These are some things i have missed so far.
A trio of crickets moved into the front room with me last night. The generator typically runs from seven thirty to ten thirty at night, and then cuts out, leaving you with no internet, no power, and no light. This can be a problem if you are say...in the shower. All the bugs dont have a light to swarm so they head towards noise, which is incidentally right where you are standing under the shower head. Anyway the crickets moved under the desk so that last night I heard them wooing each other all night long. Crickets are quite loud actually.
A praying mantis flew in the open window while we were typing the other night, and was gently gliding around until it encountered George's afro and got stuck. Neither George nor the mantis were happy with this situation, and he knocked it on the computer where it savaged his mouse pad to show its displeasure. THen it flew onto Father Ben, who crushed it and threw it out the door.
The other day, as we were driving back to the mission for lunch, we saw a crowd of school children on the road. It was their lunch time too, and there were literally so many of them that you couldnt see past them. They had surrounded a UN truck, and as we pulled up, the mobbed us. Most of them were delightedly shouting "Good Morning Khawaja!!!" which was cute, but as it turned out, they had actually been mobbing the UN truck for a reason-a motorbike had hit a kid and driven off, so they had stopped the truck to take the kid to the hospital. We could see the child on one of the UN worker's laps and they stopped long enough to tell us what happened before speeding off.
We have pasta here! Florence cooked us penne last night and spagetti today. So even though we are getting traditional food, we are also getting pasta and rice and chapati and things we recognize.
I got a report by this Japanese anthropologist from the Director of the SSRRC which is all about the people in Lafon. Its this really extensive report about their habits, but i just looked at how long he studied them for. January 12-22, 2007. Seriously?
George and I had a meeting this morning and then wandered around the markets together. We got some ice cold mango juice and the Sudense version of ginger beer, both of which were delicious. We got quasi lost and found our way out again, we went through the butcher section, the food section, the clothing section etc.
Father Voney is teaching me arabic so I knew some basic words and so I could talk to people. Everyone was really friendly and saying hi to us which was nice. I'll describe it more later, when I'm not suppose to be doing internet work, but suffice it to say that we had a run-in with National Security that could have gone very badly if George and I were less awesome. I'm going to leave you with that tantalizing hint, and start doing some research.
Toodles!
Ps. Smisch, i had a dream about you where you were back from San Fran and I was back from SUdan and we were hanging out at Smith but I kept saying in the dream "this is a dream!" Wouldnt it be cool if you had the SAME DREAM and then it would mean we were communicating?
also Meg Good Luck in Tanazania! Read my dad's comment to you! You're amazing!

Ok, so if the "lizard - restaurant" quote provoked disquieting imagery, the sentence "...we had a run-in with National Security that could have gone very badly if George and I were less awesome" causes a near panic attack. I will stave it off until I hear more details but please please do not take security forces lightly. Please. Daddy's heart is healthy, we don't want to cause a sudden change in that!
well i don't remember having a dream like that...but i do know that i had some very vivid dreams last night...i just can't remember what they were about. so it is very possible that we have been sleep-communicating. who knows?
